You need only to focus on the top 5 to 6 engines. We've found that 80% of traffic comes from the top 20% of search portals.   Google: One of the most important search engine crawlers, if not THE MOST important. To be listed in Google you must first be listed in a major search directory such as Yahoo or Open Directory Project. Then Google's crawler will pick up the pages of your web site and add them to the Google directory. Google takes data from Open Directory Project and uses it's own system to show search results.

  Yahoo: Yahoo requires that commercial sites pay a Yahoo Express submission fee of $299. per year. This fee doesn't guarantee that you will be listed, only that you'll get a yes or no answer about being accepted within seven business days.

  Open Directory Project: Submission is free. There's no guaranteed turnaround time to getting a yes or no answer about whether you've been listed or when you will be listed.

  Overture: Overture offers several pay per click programs. Precision Match, Site Match, Local Match and Content Match. Find out more!

  LookSmart: LookSmart is a human-compiled directory. Commercial sites pay to be listed in the commercial categories. And volunteer editors at the LookSmart-owned Zeal directory catalog sites into non-commercial categories for free. Zeal's listings are integrated into LookSmart's search results.

  AOL Search: AOL essentially duplicates the editorial and ad listings that are shown on Google and also uses the search data from Open Directory Project, so you need to be listed with Google and/or Open Directory Project to show up on AOL. You will have better positioning by being on Google.

  MSN Search: It provides access to Yahoo listings but not as much functionality in terms of other types of searches that you'll find at Yahoo itself. However, MSN is developing its own crawler-based technology and planning other changes that should revitalize the service in later 2004. You need to be listed with Yahoo and Overture to appear in MSN.

  AltaVista: Search results on AltaVista are powered by Yahoo! Search Technology. You must be listed on Yahoo or Overture to appear in AltaVista.

  AllTheWeb: Search results on AllTheWeb are powered by Yahoo! Search Technology. You must be listed on Yahoo or Overture to appear in AltaVista.

  Ask Jeeves and Teoma: Ask Jeeves depends on crawler-based technology to provide results to its users. These results come from the Teoma search engine, that it owns. To be listed in either, you need to be listed in a major directory such as Yahoo. Then the Teoma crawler will pick up your site.

  HotBot: To be listed on HotBot, a site needs to appear in the major crawlers: Yahoo, Google and Teoma. Then HotBot willl pick up your site.

  Lycos: For the main editorial listings at Lycos, you need to be listed with AllTheWeb.com, which is described above on this page.

 Netscape Search: Netscape essentially duplicates the editorial and ad listings that are shown on Google and Open Directory Project, so you need to be listed with Google to appear on Netscape.
